An introduction to Australasia
Australsia, the world's smallest and driest continent is composed primarily of Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea as well as the adjacent islands.
Australia is mostly desert or semi arid and most of its population of around 20.6 million is concentrated in the large coastal cities. Only the southeast and southwest corners have a temperate climate. The north is tropical and includes rainforest and mangrove swamps.
New Zealand is a milder country in the southwest Pacific Ocean, comprising North and South island as well as numerous smaller islands. Because of its geographical isolation from the rest of the world New Zealand has much unique flora and fauna that can be found only in this area.
Papua New Guinea is located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. A spine of mountains runs along its length forming a populous highlands region. Dense rainforests can be found in the lowland and coastal areas. The terrain makes it difficult to move around this underdeveloped country, and in some areas planes are the only mode of transport.
